How to: Changing photo layouts & templates
Templates control how many photos the iPad/iPhone app takes, and how your photos, slow-mos, and boomerangs look when they're processed. Use templates to add backgrounds, overlays, and text to your guests' creations!
Yes, you can also completely customize your photo booth layouts in Booth.Events using templates! Templates control how many photos are taken, where they appear, and what the final image looks like which makes your event feel polished and personalized.
What Are Templates?
Templates are graphic layouts that the app uses to arrange your photos. After the iPad takes photos, it places them into the layout defined by your template and automatically uploads the final image to your gallery.
Want to create a printed photo strip? No problem. Prefer a digital collage with branding? Templates can handle that too.

What About Boomerangs and Slow-Mo?
When a guest records a slow-mo or boomerang, it will automatically use the first assigned template that has exactly one photo area. If you don’t want those captures to appear inside a template, simply don’t assign a 1-photo template to your event.
Use Our Templates or Design Your Own
- Use the built-in Booth.Events templates to get started quickly.
- Duplicate an existing template to customize it.
- Or upload a ZIP file of a template you’ve purchased from your favorite designer.
Choosing the Right Template Size
Before you dive into design, ask yourself:
- Will this be printed? If so, pick a size that matches your printer (e.g., 4x6).
- Does your printer cut strips? Make sure the design is symmetrical.
- Not printing? You have full freedom to choose the digital canvas size.
You can choose from preset sizes like 4x6, or enter your own custom pixel dimensions.
How to Edit Templates
The Booth.Events template editor is easy to use and lets you:
- Define Photo Areas: These are where photos will be placed.
- Control Photo Order: Each photo area has an “Order” number. Want the same image in multiple spots? Use the same number more than once.
- Upload images for the background, overlay, or even text (for now, text must be added as an image).
- Create a design using an image editor (e.g., Photoshop) that’s the same size as your template, and upload those assets.
We’ve written a separate article with detailed instructions on using the template editor.
Uploading Template ZIP Files
If you upload a ZIP template, Booth.Events will automatically detect the first image inside to determine the size (width & height) of your template. No need to set dimensions manually.
Don’t Forget to Assign the Template to Your Event!
A template alone won’t do anything unless it’s assigned to an event. To do that:
- Open your event in the dashboard.
- Click Edit Event.
- Choose your custom template under the template section.
Done! Your booth is now using your beautiful new layout.
